貝は、夜光貝をメインにアオ（ミドリ）色、パール色と、マベ貝のオーロラ色、クロ色を使います。
夜光貝は、屋久島から南のサンゴ礁の海に生息する大型の巻貝です。食用としても好まれる貝ですが、古代から食器や宝飾品としても使われて来たものです。奈良の正倉院には国宝として、琵琶琴や八角鏡などに夜光貝の螺鈿の細工が施された品が、当時の美しい光をそのままに納められています。また、世界文化遺産としても、中尊寺金色堂の建造物の壁面には夜光貝が装飾されています。
夜光貝は外側の表層から、その下にアオミドリ色の層、そして真珠層へと内側へ向かい幾重かの層があります。アオまたはミドリ色の層は、個体によりますが、ターコイズ（石）のブルーのようなあでやかなものから、森のような深いグリーンまで幅広いカラーがあります。真珠層はパールのように輝き、その光は、アオやピンク、グリーンなどと、サンゴ礁のようなカラフルな色彩を真珠層の奥に宿しています。
また、ここ加計呂麻島では、真珠の養殖が産業として現在もあり、そのパールを育てる貝のひとつにマベ貝があります。マベ貝は、大型の二枚貝で、外側はクロ色、内側はやがて真珠の色となるオーロラ色や虹色のような光をもつのが特徴です。
どちらの貝も、天然の色そのものです。ひとつとして同じものはなく、作り手としても、その色彩との出会いは毎回の楽しみでもあります。

Along with great green turban shells for coloring green, blue and “pearl”, we also use the penguin’s wing oyster (a pearl oyster) for colors of “aurora” and black.
Great green turban shells are large sea snails that inhabit the coral sea as south from Yakushima island hundreds of kilometers north of Amami island chain. They have been used as materials for tableware and jewelry from ancient times while also valued as food. In a World Heritage (cultural) site “Shosoin” Treasure House (built in mid 8th century) of Todai-ji Temple in Nara, Japan, there exists such many national treasure items as Biwa-harp and octagonal mirror bearing Japanese “Raden” decorations using great green turban shells which still remain shiny elegantly. Great green turban shells are also used as an ornament on inner walls of another World Heritage site Chuson-ji temple’s “Konjikido” Golden Hall (built in 1124) in Iwate,Japan.
A shell of great green turban comprises several layers inward. A blue-green layer inside of the outer surface, then a pearl layer further inward. The blue-green layer, although it varies individually, some see bright turquoise blue while others show deep forest-like greenness. The pearl layer shines the way as easily imagined. The layer also contains diverse colors like blue, green and pink deep inside, just as live corals in the tropical sea.
Here in Kakeroma island, pearl farming is a distinctive industry. Penguin’s wing oyster is a common shell used for farming pearls. Penguin’s wing oyster is a large bivalve that is black on the outer surface while it shines like “aurora” or “rainbow” inside.
Both the great green turban shell and the penguin’s wing oyster show true natural colors. They are all unique in colors individually. And this fact gives us an enthusiasm for our creativity.
